Enhancing Mathematics Teaching and Learning

Recording: Common Mistakes vs Common Misconceptions (M-S-126)

Description
Teachers often predict where students will ‘go wrong’ in a problem or when learning a new mathematical concept. There are common mistakes we expect students to make and misconceptions we know they come to us with. But what is the difference between common mistakes and common misconceptions? How do we recognize them in our students' work or discourse? Do we address them the same way? Let’s take some time to unravel these two ideas and discuss strategies for dealing with both.
